What are you putting off?

“I just need one more hour in the day!” I hear this from so many people and I bet you’ve said it yourself at some point recently too.

Well, you’ll get that hour this weekend when the clocks go back in Ireland and the UK, so make sure you don’t waste it by procrastinating over what to do!

Everyone procrastinates at one time or another. t’s a problem that I think probably everybody has to deal with at one point or another (including myself). Why do we do it?

It’s because fundamentally, procrastination is a quick-fix mood repair. Not doing a specific task might make you feel better in the short term, but when you stop to think about it, it’s actually quite self-destructive behaviour, because you’re most likely making life difficult for yourself in the future.

So, what’s that thing you’ve been putting off? Why not take the extra hour this weekend and make a start on it? Your future self will thank you!

5 steps to stop procrastination

  1. Break big tasks into smaller chunks
  2. Use the 3-minute rule – often, you’ll want to continue once you’ve started
  3. Remove distractions before starting
  4. Set specific times – instead of saying “I’ll do it today,” schedule it for 10am
  5. Reward yourself when you've finished!

As we wind down for the holiday break I always like to look back and reflect on the year we have been through for any lessons of note. These lessons can be valuable insights that will help me formulate a plan for the year ahead, so I usually put a day or two aside after Christmas (but before the New Year) to sit down with my notebook and start mapping out the next 12 months. Review the plans you made last year and whether you achieved them partially or fully - if not, why not? Are there any...

If I say ‘investment’, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Do you immediately think of bankers, traders, Wall Street and the Stock Exchange? How often do you think about investing in yourself? I don’t mean that in terms of making investments – status symbols like a flashy watch or a great car. I’m talking about investment in terms of your own development. Investing in yourself isn't just about the financial side of things—it's about building a better version of you. Most people focus...

One of the biggest rules in improvisation is that you must always say ‘Yes, and…’ to continue your scene. Anything else closes everything down and doesn’t allow for any creative play. This is a good lesson to take into the real world, I think. When I’m talking to someone, and especially if they’ve asked me for advice, my heart sinks when I hear them say ‘Yes, but…’. What generally follows is a collection of reasons why something won’t work, why they don’t want to try a particular thing, it...
