Focus on what you can control

As we head into the weekend, there are a lot of confused, scared and angry people out there. You might be one of them, scratching your head about what happened in the US this week with the re-election of Trump.

At times like this, as much as you might want to stay informed and up to date, consuming every piece of news and social media isn’t helpful. Instead, it can leave you feeling both helpless and powerless.

I always advise people to focus on what they can control and influence, rather than fretting about what they can’t. In life, we have three circles of influence: the inner circle, which is you. You’re in total control of everything going on – your emotions and your behaviour. This is where your focus needs to be. Then we have the outer circle, which is your friends and family. You have a reasonable amount of influence here, but be mindful that it doesn’t become controlling.

Finally, we have the great beyond, which is everything else. You have ZERO control over anyone’s thoughts and opinions here, so it’s effectively pointless spending time and energy worrying about it.

Focus on what you can control in your own life, and try not to worry about the rest.

5 steps to surviving a crisis

  1. Always plan for a rainy day and mitigate risk
  2. Take ownership – don’t try to blame others
  3. Be aware of your cognitive biases: don’t let your brain play tricks on you
  4. Don’t ignore the situation and hope it’ll just go away
  5. Don’t follow the herd – do what’s right for you

As we wind down for the holiday break I always like to look back and reflect on the year we have been through for any lessons of note. These lessons can be valuable insights that will help me formulate a plan for the year ahead, so I usually put a day or two aside after Christmas (but before the New Year) to sit down with my notebook and start mapping out the next 12 months. Review the plans you made last year and whether you achieved them partially or fully - if not, why not? Are there any...

If I say ‘investment’, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Do you immediately think of bankers, traders, Wall Street and the Stock Exchange? How often do you think about investing in yourself? I don’t mean that in terms of making investments – status symbols like a flashy watch or a great car. I’m talking about investment in terms of your own development. Investing in yourself isn't just about the financial side of things—it's about building a better version of you. Most people focus...

One of the biggest rules in improvisation is that you must always say ‘Yes, and…’ to continue your scene. Anything else closes everything down and doesn’t allow for any creative play. This is a good lesson to take into the real world, I think. When I’m talking to someone, and especially if they’ve asked me for advice, my heart sinks when I hear them say ‘Yes, but…’. What generally follows is a collection of reasons why something won’t work, why they don’t want to try a particular thing, it...
